Exploring surgical careers

We are thrilled to share the success of the Career in Surgery programme launched by West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) and supported by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Launched in November 2023, this project provides a comprehensive overview of careers in surgery, presenting a spectrum of opportunities available.

The project strives to dispel common misconceptions and ensure students gain a realistic understanding of the world of work, including the various routes they can pursue.

So far over 1,000 pupils from across West Yorkshire have participated in webinar modules with surgery professionals to get a deeper insight into the careers and the skills and values needed to access them.

Upon successful completion of the modules, participants are awarded certificates that can enhance their applications, CVs, or serve as a foundation for further learning.

This was then followed up in January with a live event for over 100 pupils at Heckmondwike Grammar School with over 30 NHS professionals who generously contributed their expertise through engaging workshops and demonstrations.

The initiative aligns with broader plans within the NHS to enhance theatre capacity in hospital trusts, with four new sites earmarked for development in West Yorkshire.

The Schools Partnership Team is committed to supporting WYAAT to foster a larger theatre workforce which is vital to meeting the evolving needs of our population.

The project will continue with further live school events, online learning modules and virtual webinars. For further information and to access the webinar recordings click the button below.
