Employment Hub Support

Are you looking for support in finding employment? Read about Martin, who has recently been working with an employment advisor to help him get into a job.

Martin is a 52-year-old who contacted the Employment and Skills Leeds service after hearing positive things from his sister, who had also received support.

Jo, an advisor working at Employment and Skills Leeds, contacted Martin to arrange a face-to-face meeting at a Community Hub. 

Martin confirmed he had not worked since 1997 due to several different barriers.   

He had previously received support from Forward Leeds and felt he was now ready to make the next steps into training or employment. Having struggled with confidence, Martin was nervous about the prospect of interviews as he lacked recent experience. 

After attending further sessions with Jo, they talked about the skills he has acquired over his lifetime. He hadn’t recognised what skills, knowledge and experience he could offer in a workplace. 

During follow-on sessions, they completed his CV: and compiled a template cover letter, then talked him through job search techniques and interview preparation. At the end of July, he felt that he was confident enough to apply for jobs.

They continued to talk and work together throughout August: where Martin applied for various jobs. He also attended a Christmas jobs fair at Albion Street Hub, where he spent over an hour talking to employers and training providers.  

At the beginning of October, he received information on a job opportunity for a cleaning position in Leeds City Centre. He applied for the role, completed an interview and was successful. He started his new job as a cleaning operative for an agency in Leeds City Centre. As he only has a part time position, he is also avidly applying for further employment and still receives regular support. Martin's confidence has improved immensely, and he is positive for the future.
