Tell us a bit about your apprenticeship role

I work in the Inclusive Economy Skills & Culture directorate in the Employment & Skills team. My role allows me to work with all the teams in the directorate doing a number of varied jobs and functions. As the title implies the role contains a large amount of administrative work but I also get the chance to work on my own projects that are self-directed and tailored to my skills and interests.

What made you want to do an apprenticeship?

Wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do for a career but knew I wanted to do something that directly/indirectly helps people and the apprenticeship at WYCA in Employment and Skills seemed like a good fit. I also liked that I would be learning on the job and developing new skills whilst putting them into practice at work.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Be open-minded and willing to try new things you never thought you’d appreciate or enjoy working on. And, be mindful that whilst the job/work is a key part of the apprenticeship the studies need to be focused on too. And it’s easy to get sucked into work when you get going.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

Meeting new people and developing key skills to make progress in my career. I’ve also enjoyed being given the opportunity to do varied work, work that interests me and have had the chance to have my say on projects.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I wish I’d have considered doing an apprenticeship sooner, it’s given me many opportunities for personal growth and professional development, whilst being paid a fair wage along the way.
