Overview/summary of training
This course is aimed at individuals seeking a career in the construction industry as a pipelayer or groundworker. The skills, knowledge and certification gained will provide them with the core competencies to work in this role and a foundation from which to build a successful career.
The course is also an excellent route for those looking to undertake a craft or trade but who first want to get an overview of the industry before committing.
Week 1
Delivered: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Hours: from 09:00 to 16:30 daily
Participants will develop a knowledge associated with
- The principles of health, safety, welfare and environmentally responsible work practices and how they must be applied in relation to the work, self and to others including understanding the principles of risk assessments.
- Basic awareness of environmental and health hazards.
- Why, when and how health and safety control equipment should be used when undertaking groundworks (e.g. personal protective equipment (PPE))
Potential to achieve the NOCN Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. Successful completion of the qualification fulfils the CSCS training requirements for the CSCS Labourer's Card.
Week 2
Delivered: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Hours: from 09:00 to 16:30 daily
Participants will develop knowledge and skills associated with
- Working safely and securely in compliance with given information, organisational policies and procedures, and current health, safety and welfare legislation including following the procedures for working in contaminated ground.
- Selecting the required resources including tools and fixtures
- Setting out and laying flags, paviours and edging to paths
- Installing ironworks relating to access covers and frames, and gully grates and frames including preparatory brickwork
- Using and maintaining power tools and equipment (including; compactor plates; Stihl saw)
Potential to achieve NOCN Accredited SiteRight- The Safe Use of Cut Off Saws including Abrasive Wheels.
Week 3
Delivered: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Hours: from 09:00 to 16:30 daily
Participants will develop knowledge and skills associated with
- Permit to dig documentation.
- Knowledge associated with cofferdams.
- The basic principles of internal and external drainage & ducting systems
- Installing and testing basic drainage and ducting
- Using basic setting out equipment including tape measures, levels, straight edges, lines and pins, boning rods and laser equipment under guidance of the supervisor
- Providing and removing temporary works including shallow excavation support (up to 1.2 metres)
Throughout the delivery behaviours associated with effective communication; respect and teamwork will be developed with a focus on customer service.
