This course is designed for current Volunteers in the Health and Social Care Sector and individuals with lived experience looking to improve their self-development and employability skills to apply for paid Health and Social Care roles in West Yorkshire.

Eligibility - You must be aged 19+ and live in West Yorkshire.

Dates: Course ongoing until December 2024

Duration: Programmes will run for 6 weeks (4 hours each week)

Venue: Classroom learning - Venues across West Yorkshire

Course overview

This training will support your self-development and enhance your employability skills. It will help you move from your volunteering / care role and apply for paid NHS Peer Support roles and other health and social care jobs.

You will be covering topics such as:

Introduction to careers in the Health & Social Care sector

  • Exploration of roles
  • Strengths and values exercise

Developing transferable professionalism within Health and Social Care

  • Time Management
  • The Performance Equation and productivity in the workplace
  • Basic Project Management Skills
  • Introduction to Research skills

CV and Application writing

  • Powerful Language and Action words
  • Creating a Life CV
  • Creating a Skills based CV
  • CAR and STAR technique

Developing your online presence

  • Understanding and utilising LinkedIn for Career development
  • Social media and Mental Health awareness 

Barriers to Career Development

  • Barriers to Employment and Career Success
  • Personal SWOT Profiling
  • Job loss and mental health post COVID-19

Career Decision Making

  • Factors influencing decisions
  • Disability confident employers
  • Career Values
  • Career decision making theories (how to identify and mindfully use)
  • Smarter action planning for next steps

What next?

After the training you can expect:

  • Increased volunteering responsibilities, after the minimum commitment period, allowing you to develop your skillset towards support vacancies
  • To have the confidence to apply for future paid Peer Support Worker vacancies which the NHS intend to create within West Yorkshire and Harrogate areas
  • To have increased confidence to apply for other social care support and health / wellbeing roles within Health and Social care settings
  • To better understand career progression routes and further training opportunities for higher level courses in Health and Social care
