The course is for H&SC practitioners who are looking to progress to the next level in their careers into a supervisory, people manager or mentoring role.

Participants will develop the skills needed to be a mentor to enable them to take on mentoring responsibility in a current or new role.

Participants must be currently employed within a health and social care organisation and have an opportunity to mentor others as part of their role.

Dates: Courses will run until December 2024

Duration: 2-day face-to-face sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays – 10am-4pm.

Skills audit completed prior to workshops and 121 coaching with the tutor following the 2-day course.

Course overview

Mentoring in a health and social care setting plays a crucial role in supporting the development and professional growth of individuals working in this field. Whether it’s nurses, social workers, caregivers or other healthcare professionals, mentoring provides guidance, knowledge sharing and encouragement to help them thrive in their roles. This programme provides delegates with the essential skills needed to mentor others in busy and demanding clinical and non-clinical settings.

Understand the purpose and definition of mentoring:

Mentors on the programme will likely have extensive experience in their clinical or non-clinical field in various healthcare settings. They have accumulated knowledge and expertise and this experience allows them to provide valuable insights and guidance to new or more junior staff.

Understand the benefits of mentoring:

The focus of mentors will be to transfer knowledge and help with skills development, such as clinical procedures, evidence-based practice, clinical skills, patient care, documentation and other essential clinical or non-clinical skills.

Mentors will also support mentees with networking and building professional connections to improve career prospects and knowledge of the health and social care sector.

Mentoring skills in a busy health or social care setting:

Active listening and empathy

Effective communication

Building trust

Providing constructive feedback in the moment

Mentoring process:

Finding the time to mentor another person in a busy health and social care environment can be difficult. In this session, we will cover:

How to establish rapport and trust when mentoring during a busy shift.

How to set goals and expectations to ensure everyone is clear on the mentor and mentee’s roles and responsibilities in a clinical and non-clinical setting.

How to schedule regular meetings and check-ins despite conflicting priorities and demands on time.

The importance of monitoring and evaluating progress and providing feedback.

Provide emotional support:

Resilience and wellbeing techniques to share with a mentee when dealing with emotional or stressful situations in a health and social care setting.

What Next?

This course is designed to provide delegates with mentoring and supervisory skills to improve their prospects of moving into more senior people management positions in future, a mentor role/supervisory role.
