Eligibility:

  • Be aged 19+ 
  • Living in West Yorkshire
  • Not have participated in a Skills Connect programme this financial year
  • No previous screen industry experience is required — just enthusiasm and commitment. Equipment can be provided where needed, and a personal laptop is helpful but not essential.

Overview/summary of training

Kickstart your career in the Screen Industries!

Our highly successful part-time training programme is designed to build your confidence and skills and empower you to embark on a rewarding career in the screen industries. You’ll explore a range of behind-the-scenes roles across Film, TV, Animation, Games, VFX, and Virtual Production — including costume, art department, hair and make-up, locations, production office, sound, lighting, camera, editing, and more.

Through hands-on workshops, masterclasses, and projects, you’ll gain practical knowledge of how screen productions work — from script development to post-production — and build a clearer picture of where your skills and interests fit within the industry.

The course also supports your career journey, with tailored 1:1 advice, mentoring, and practical guidance on freelancing, set etiquette, building your CV and portfolio, and finding your first job or placement.

By completing this course, you will:

  • Gain confidence in how productions work and what employers expect
  • Understand career options across different departments and roles
  • Receive practical advice on networking, freelancing, and finding work
  • Build a strong CV and interview skills with support from screen professionals
  • Access Screen Yorkshire’s Trainee Hub and Crew Service to support next step


If you're successful in applying, you'll dive into an exciting training programme that takes you behind the scenes of the screen industries — from the first spark of an idea to post-production and getting a finished project out into the world. Along the way, you'll explore a huge range of roles: from research, storytelling, development, production office work, and editing, to on-set crew jobs in departments like locations, costume, hair and make-up, art department, production, script supervision, lighting, camera, and sound, postproduction, marketing & distribution.

You'll learn directly from industry professionals through masterclasses and practical workshops, sharpen your skills with CV and interview coaching, and get real-world advice on how to freelance successfully — covering everything from managing your finances to building a strong network. You'll also learn set etiquette, so you’re ready to step onto a real set with confidence.

Attending the programme will equip you with:

  • Understanding of entry level opportunities within the screen industries, including Film, TV, VFX, Virtual Production, Animation and Games
  • Progression opportunities and career paths within the screen industries
  • Basic set etiquette, preparing participants for entry level job roles in the screen industries
  • CV and interview skills
  • Increased confidence and recognition of transferable knowledge, skills and individual abilities
  • Opportunities to explore a role/work area they are interested in with the help of an industry mentor
  • Understanding what it means to work as a freelancer within the screen industries
  • Access to information about screen industries job and training opportunities and where to find them
  • Access to Screen Yorkshire’s ongoing support, including trainee hub, crew service and further training opportunities
